Re: places I've seen them? |
So what's your own language? Wikipedia says the main ones are Khasi, Garo, Bengali, Nepali, Hindi, Marathia, Asamiya (Assamese, I assume?), Maram, Raba and Koch. That's an interesting mix for sure. How would you say something ordinary and everyday in Khasi, like, oh, "That's too expensive! Could you reduce the price a bit?"
Meghalaya Mama isn't here but my husband might speak some Khasi, since he spent some time in Meghalaya and is super good in languages. Teach me some and I'll surprise him :-)

Re: places I've seen them? |
Is that 'nga aat' as in the Hindi 8 or 'eight' as in English?
So, given that it's getting late-ish ... Bom ja?
Yes, I'm American. Never been to India, just the border area. Hoping to go to Goa to the beach, though. The Northeast definitely sounds interesting.
How in the world did you get into the GD?

'eight' as in english
its 11 Am in the morning here right now....must be late evening out there.
'Bam ja noh' (lets hv dinner) not Bom...
well just heard them once twice & got hooked u know...can't explain the logic but I feel everyone have that kind of feeling/reception to a particular group, specially the Dead....once you're caught u'r caught! hook, line & sinker...& if you don't get it - you don't get it. I put them on the stereo almost every day but no one in my home seems to be that interested...not my wife not by brothers not my friends...

Re: places I've seen them? |
Assuming you're on Indian time, I'm 15 minutes ahead of you (in Kathmandu). The time stamp on forum posts is California time. For me right now it's 3:56 p.m. But most forumites are in the US, with some in the UK and occasional appearances from Thailand and Bali.
So my husband remembered it pretty well (bam/bom ja) for only one month in Shillong when he was 16, LOL. Khasi seems super difficult to me. Like Burmese or Thai rather than Hindi or Bengali.
Good luck converting friends/family to your musical tastes. You'd probably have to convince them that Jerry danced like Michael Jackson for it to hold any interest :-)
